The City Council of VIC and University of Lleida partner with ICK to significantly empower female students

The beneficiaries of the "Girls and Women Students’ Empowerment Project" at the Institut  Catholique de Kabgayi (ICK) say that the financial assistance they are obtaining from this project allows them to steadily realize their dreams and expect a bright future. Although this support is nominal in relation to the real needs of a university student, it has so far a significant positive impact for the beneficiaries as they are confident to a promising future thanks to this financial assistance.

“Girls and Women Students’ Empowerment” at the Catholic Institute of Kabgayi is a project aimed at helping female students in a situation of precariousness while they are eager to pursue higher education.

One of the beneficiaries registered within the Department of Rural and Urban Development testifies that although her family was aware of the paramount role of university studies in shaping the future of her daughter, and despite her eager desire to pursue undergraduate studies, the family did not have enough means to afford her daughter's higher education. "Since I couldn’t find a remunerating job after I graduated from high school, I stayed at home doing housework for 5 years with no hope. For now that I get a financial support from the project "Girls and Women empowerment" at ICK; even if my family still strives to find half of the annual tuition fees, I am very proud to pursue university studies in a relevant field and do hope that upon my graduation, I’ll have access to the opportunities that society traditionally offers more to men than to women. To sum up, the support of the project opened my horizons and I do hope to a bright future very soon." reveals the student.
As for her colleague registered within Environmental Management, with the assistance from the project, her dream is incontestably becoming true. "Education is wealth, an investment that never perishes and the best way to break down gender barriers" she added. "Not only is it impossible to achieve gender equality without education, but expanding education opportunities for all can help stimulate productivity and thereby reduce the economic vulnerability of poor households" Honorine pointed out. She goes on confirming that the assistance from the project is empowering all beneficiaries and the more they have access to higher education, they will have more job opportunities to improve their socio-economic conditions.
As for another female student at the Faculty of Education, the support she is getting from the program will irrefutably have a positive impact on more people. "The assistance by the project permitted me to register to higher education. As a result, I am not only acquiring new skills and competences I didn’t have before but relevant to my teaching profession. Besides, I trust in improving my family’s living conditions thanks to increased income my profession will generate upon obtaining a university degree" she said.

Since it was launched in 2019, "Girls and Women Students’ Empowerment Project" is supported by two key donors partners from Spain: the City Council of VIC (Catalonia-Spain) and Rosa Dilmé Association that provide a subsidy of 50% of the annual tuition fees to 20 female students as well as the University of Lleida (Catalonia-Spain) that supports 34 female students with 25% of their tuition fees. Other donors are the most welcome so as to support and to empower more girls and women who lack enough means to enroll in higher education.
