BACKGROUND

The Faculty of Sciences of development is one of the faculties of ICK, created on 21st October 2002 by the Catholic Diocese of Kabgayi.

After the genocide against the Tutsi in 1994, Rwanda had a great need of experts in the development sector and the priority of the Government was to educate people with high capacity in project planning and implementation, environmental management for sustainable development.

In order to contribute to the country’ s efforts of addressing problems related to people’s development, environment protection, ICK has created  in its programs the training of experts in development and environmental fields.

DEPARTMENTS

The Faculty runs its programs through two departments:

  • The Department of Rural and Urban Development
  • The Department of Environmental Management
  PROGRAMS

The teaching programs are organized in two sections: Day section and weekend section. The training methods are active and participative within the framework of the modular system, English being the medium of instruction. 

DEPARTMENT OF RURAL AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT  

Degree conferred: Bachelor degree in Rural and Urban development

Objective 

The overall objectives of this department are about producing professionals who are able to initiate and manage development dynamics in both rural area and urban one. Those include the design and management in the domain of: agriculture, farming enterprises, cooperatives management, employment creation, gender and social justice,

Specific objectives of Rural and Urban development 
  • Train professionals capable of creating and managing in a rational and optimal way the projects and /or the companies;
  • Promote an ecologically friendly development through the creation of a quality biophysical environment which ensures both the protection of biodiversity and the creation of systems of long-lasting output;
  • Participate in different training programs relating to development ;
  • Promote joint research activities in different domains.
Careers in Rural and Urban Development 

Students who will have followed the program of rural and urban development will be employed in the following fields:

  • projects development design and management,
  • rural and urban development planning,
  • cooperative management,
  • agriculture and animal husbandry management,
  • policies development local and central  government Institutions,
  • land use planning for rural and urban areas.
DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT 

Degree conferred: Bachelor degree in Environmental Management

Objectives

The Bachelor of Environmental Management program aims to produce graduates who understand the complexity and context of environmental decision-making; able to collect, process and evaluate environmental information through a variety of approaches; able to develop appropriate strategies for managing environments and associated resources and to implement all development projects in respect of environmental sounds.

Specific objectives of environmental management 
  • Train professionals capable of managing environments problems related to human activities and climate change, 
  • Promote an ecologically friendly development through the creation of a quality biophysical environment which ensures both the protection of biodiversity and the creation of systems of long-lasting output;
  • Participate in different training programs relating to development ;
  • Promote joint research activities in different domains.
Careers in environmental management

Students who will have followed the program of environmental management will be employed in the following fields:

  • Natural resources protection and protection,
  • environmental health management ,
  • impact assessment and environmental auditing,
  • water resources management including catchment areas,
  • Landscape design
  • Land use planning
  • Waste management.
